History of Urdu News
Urdu language came into existence from the 11TH century onwards. Urdu is a lashkari (soldier) language. The main purpose of Urdu language was to make communication easier between Arabs, Turks and other locals.
Jam-i-Jahan-Numa was the first Urdu language newspaper. It was established in 1822 in Kolkata by Harihar Dutta. In 1835, Urdu newspapers began to be issued freely in India. This great idea of publishing Urdu news influenced many other publishing agencies to publish news in Urdu language which will aid locals to understand their local language.
After 1857, Urdu press entered new era of development. There was an extensive growth in Urdu journalism from the 1850s till independence in 1947. Some of the popular Urdu newspapers during the 20th century are as follows:
